A web-based electronic asthma action plan that incorporates guidelines from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute into the Cerner Millennium platform greatly reduces asthma-related visits to the emergency department, oral steroid use, and asthma exacerbations, according to a new study.

“It has clinical decision support worked into it, so it helps guide appropriate therapy, and it’s integrated into the patient’s record,” said Lindsay Kuhn, MHS, director of the clinical trials quality division at Carolinas Healthcare Systems. She copresented the results here at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2014 National Conference and Exhibition.
