Fighting Hospital Acquired Infections

On July 30, CMS issued its final rule on “Never Events,” events secondary to primary diagnosis for which the CMS will not reimburse at a higher rate. To the relief of many, HAIs were not included on this list. CMS is bound to revisit this issue in the future, however, and today we will learn about some of the most prevalent HAIs and which patients are most at risk and why 87% of hospitals do not follow recommendations to prevent many of the most common hospital-acquired infections from Omar Lateef, DO, Director, Medical Intensive Care Unit, Rush Memorial Medical Center, Chicago.

Dr. Lateef earned his DO from Des Moines Unversity in Des Moines, Iowa, and then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at New York University Downtown Hospital in New York City. He came to Rush as a fellow in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep mediciine and as chief fellow in pulmonary and critical care medicine.
