Using Protocols and Bundles to Fight Ventilator Associated Pneumonia

Bundles and protocols have been shown to drastically cut the incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia. Today Ruben Restrepo,, MD, will review some of the components of the `VAP prevention bundle and how each helps to prevent its occurrence.

Dr Restrepo obtained his diploma as physician and surgeon from Colombia, South America. He moved to the United States and shortly after graduated from the respiratory therapy program at Georgia State University in 1994. Dr Restrepo was appointed as assistant professor at Georgia State University in 1999 and accepted a position as associate professor in the Department of Respiratory Care at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2005. While in Georgia he worked as a PICU respiratory therapist at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and was part of the ECMO, ground, and flight transport teams. He received his recognition as a fellow of the AARC in 2007. He is a member of the editorial board for Respiratory Care and the Open Journal of Allergy and is the chair of the Clinical Practice Guidelines Steering Committee for the AARC. He has been invited to speak at national and international symposiums to both medical and respiratory audiences on ARDS, VILI, liquid ventilation, NPPV, and HFOV, among other topics.Dr Restrepo has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters, and abstracts.
