FDA Sets Meeting Date to Discuss the Removal of MDIs

A public meeting to solicit comments on the proposal to phase out metered dose inhalers (MDIs) is slated for December 5, in Rockville, Md, providing an additional month for discussion about plans to remove MDIs from the market.

In September, the FDA proposed a change to its regulation on the use of chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs in MDIs for epinephrine, removing the “essential use” designation that allows the use of CFCs in these medical devices.

The agency has proposed that any rule finalizing the removal of the essential use for OTC epinephrine MDIs have an effective date of December 31, 2010.
