Fifty-five experts from 25 international organizations have published a new treatment guideline for the treatment of sepsis and sepsis-related ARDS in the journals Critical Care Medicine and Intensive Care Medicine.
Management of hospitalized patients with sepsis should include early initiation of target-specific fluid resuscitation and early antibiotic therapy accompanied by a concerted effort to identify the source of infection, specialists in critical care medicine advised in an updated guideline.
Patients with sepsis-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) should have volume-targeted mechanical ventilation. Hospitals and healthcare systems should develop and implement programs and strategies to improve sepsis care, including screening for sepsis, according to the updated Surviving Sepsis Guidelines (SSG) from the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.
