A new study published in the June issue of CHEST, the journal of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), suggests that infants who receive antibiotics have a greater risk of developing asthma at age 7 than those who do not.
Researchers at University of Manitoba and McGill University monitored antibiotic use of more than 13,000 children through a prescription database. They followed the children’s progress from birth to age 7 and found that children receiving an antibiotic for nonrespiratory tract infections were almost two times as likely to develop asthma by age 7 than children who did not receive antibiotics.
