AARC Presents Awards at Respiratory Congress
The International Respiratory Congress of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) is the nation’s largest gathering for members of the respiratory community to share technical innovations and clinical advancements. At the 2004 congress, held in December, MAQUET Critical Care received the AARC 2004 “Best in Show” award for its exhibit. During exhibit hours, Maquet performed demonstrations of its Open Lung Tool—a feature that simplifies the performance of lung recruitment. Physicians were able to see how this monitoring tool optimizes gas exchange and oxygenation and minimizes patient time on ventilators.

“MAQUET’s exhibit was selected because of its beautiful design, which allowed attendees to experience the company’s products in a great atmosphere,” said Ray Masferrer, associate executive director of the AARC.
Companies that demonstrate outstanding commitment to the respiratory community were also recognized. One such company, Nellcor Puritan Bennett, received the AARC 2004 Zenith Award, an award that recognizes excellence in product quality, business practices, and customer support. This was the 15th time the company had received the Zenith Award. “The AARC views Nellcor and Puritan Bennett as leaders in servicing the respiratory care industry with superior, innovative products, and we are proud to present them with their 15th Zenith Award for their continuous dedication to the advancement of respiratory therapy,” said Sam P. Giordano, MBA, RRT, FAARC, executive director of the AARC.

A second Zenith Award was presented to Pulmonetic Systems Inc. “We are proud that our ventilators have helped caregivers all over the world improve the quality of life for so many,” said Jim Hickley, president and CEO of Pulmonetic Systems.

Bayer Diagnostics Awards Respiratory Therapist of the Year
Julie Emerick, intensive care unit coordinator for respiratory services at the University of California San Diego Medical Center, has been recognized as the respiratory therapist of the year by Bayer Diagnostics. Emerick was nominated for demonstrating compassion toward patients and improving the process of delivering quality care. She has developed programs such as a protocol to more rapidly liberate patients from ventilators in the ICU and a performance improvement program designed to improve communications between respiratory care practitioners and physicians. “Her outstanding accomplishments make Julie a worthy recipient of this year’s inaugural award,” said Michael Dalton, vice president of marketing for the diagnostics division of Bayer HealthCare.

Respironics’ Comfort Series Web Site Wins WebAward
Each year, the Web Marketing Association produces a WebAward Competition, in which participating sites go head-to-head in 80 industry categories to see which stand above the rest. Interactive agencies, Web site owners, and in-house marketing and e-commerce departments from more than 19 countries submit entries in the competition. Respironics Inc, Murrysville, Pa, was honored with a Standard of Excellence award for its Comfort Series products Web site, www.comfortseries.respironics.com.   A subsite of Respironics’ Web site, www.respironics.com, the site serves as a resource for home care providers, sleep laboratory professionals, and patients who use nasal masks along with a CPAP or bilevel positive airway pressure machine to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The Comfort Series site offers general information about OSA, therapy treatments, and detailed, product-specific information for all masks within the Comfort Series. Each Comfort Series mask has a separate page that describes features, fitting, cleaning, and part numbers. The masks also have interactive product images that show different views of each product on a patient, mistakes that could occur if the product is not being used correctly, and suggestions for how to remedy any problems. The annual WebAward Competition was founded in 1997 to foster a high standard for Internet marketing and site development.
