According to CDC researchers, global efforts have prevented nearly 500 deaths and 1,500 cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) since 2016, Healio reports.

Data collection showed that, of the 2,254 laboratory-confirmed cases reported to WHO from 2012 through Oct. 1, 2018, 1,087 were a result of human-to-human transmission and 1,167 were classified as community-acquired cases.

After 739 cases were reported in 2014 and 768 cases in 2015, only 244 cases were reported in 2016, 244 in 2017, and 113 in 2018 through September, according to Van Kerhove and colleagues.
