An outbreak of measles in Samoa has killed 53 of the 3,728 people infected and is forcing the Samoan government to shut down all public and government services on Dec 5 and 6 to aid a mass vaccination campaign.

Forty-eight of the 53 deaths were children younger than 4.

All civil servants, except for those who help supply water and electricity to the country, will participate in the vaccination campaign on Thursday and Friday by offering assistance to public health officials, Press Secretary Nanai said.
