Breath-enhanced jet nebulizer reduced emergency department length of stay by 44 minutes vs. continuous nebulizer treatment among children with moderate-to-severe asthma exacerbations, according to a recent study.

Researchers examined 50 children randomly assigned to either the standard treatment group (one or two 1-hour long continuous albuterol nebulizations) or to the rapid albuterol pathway (up to four 5-minute long albuterol treatments delivered with a breath-enhanced nebulizer, NebuTech HDN, Salter Labs).

Data demonstrated that length of stay (LOS) in the ED was shorter in the breath-enhanced group (118 vs. 163 minutes). Breath-enhanced group experienced less time receiving therapy and shorter time between reassessments.
