FDA Moves to Limit Carcinogen Content in Smokeless Tobacco

Last week, the FDA proposed setting a limit on the carcinogen N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN) in smokeless tobacco products, reports MedPageToday.

The move marks the first time the FDA has exercised its authority to establish product standards governing the design and content of tobacco products, granted under the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

The law authorized the FDA to require tobacco manufacturers to reduce or remove harmful toxic agents from tobacco products if the move benefits public health, although the agency is not allowed to regulate products off the market entirely.
