A psychologist and researcher at NYU was fired this spring for not getting a flu shot, reports Forbes.

Her appointment ended abruptly Feb 1. On that date, Dr. Charles Marmar, chair of the psychiatry department, wrote her a letter saying her services were no longer needed.

“Immunization against the flu is critical for the protection of our patients, visitors and colleagues,” Marmar wrote in the letter, which Tiefer shared with me. “Regrettably, since we have not received evidence of your vaccination, your non-compensated faculty appointment will be terminated effective immediately.”

Tiefer said she wrote back to explain she didn’t see patients. “I got a phone call back saying it’s the policy, that there are no exceptions.”

Tiefer said she had received numerous emails sent to all staff about how flu shots were “required,” but they did not mention that failure to comply would lead to termination.
